crystals that deposit in cartilage and other joint tissues in calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD). CPP crystals can cause acute episodes of arthritis (also known as pseudogout), or chronic arthritis. CPP crystal deposits can be seen on X-rays and on other imaging tests such as ultrasound. CPP crystals can be viewed in joint fluid under the microscope.
