Fit-for-Purpose

the determination that a tool, method, or instrument has been validated to a level sufficient for its intended or specified context of use. In medical product development, a “fit-for-purpose” conclusion means the available evidence supports using the tool to make decisions, collect data, or measure outcomes within the defined setting, population, or application.

Example
A patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaire designed to measure fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis is reviewed by regulators. Based on evidence of reliability, validity, and responsiveness in the target population, the agency concludes the instrument is fit-for-purpose for use as a secondary endpoint in clinical trials evaluating new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.
